Are Atheists just hedonists/materialists?

THE ACCUSATION THAT ATHEISTS ARE JUST MATERIALISTS?

This sort of thing is said as a form of attack on the person who is prepared to say they do not believe in a God/Creator.

"Oh! then, you Atheists just have a religion of your own based on materialism. You deny spiritual values and think fulfilment can come from consumerism and hedonism."

Does this sort of thing sound familiar?

It is designed to put you on the defensive and if you fall for it they have got you where they want you.

So what is a good answer to this psychological trickery?

"Are Atheists just

"Are Atheists just hedonists/materialists?"

YES!

Honestly, Mary! The fact that

Honestly, Mary! The fact that you spend so much time on this site berating us for not believing in fairies betrays a terrible lack of meaning in your own life.

Clearly religion provides you with no real satisfaction, or you would be only mildly interested in our views rather than continually exposing the hypocrisy of your position by returning again and again to spit vitriol.

As for the answer to this "psychological trickery", I think you give it too much credit, Ed. It's nothing more than empty nonsense and the best response is to ask for an explanation of the charge. Being completely without foundation, the accusation soon falls flat under the weight of its own absurdity.

This is a straight case of,

This is a straight case of, if you can't cope with the argument attack the other person.
Mary has just given us a good example.

The taking of pleasure is

The taking of pleasure is usually no offence, so why the fuss?

Church people do use this

Church people do use this sort of argument and I have to admit I couldn't think quickly enough of a good answer when it has been used on me.
I was just so damned indignant it was hard to say what was needed.
What do other Atheists say?

There's no arguing with

There's no arguing with people who refuse to listen to reason. Try this next time: "You're absolutely right. Just yesterday I sold my chldren so I could buy a bigger TV and right now I'm on my way to an orgy. You're an idiot."

Quite right trulyfree. Of

Quite right trulyfree.
Of course it does depend on the situation.
Even if it is put as a supposedly 'polite question',
"How do you have a moral compass without a belief in God", in reality it is bloody rude. Let's tell them so.
Why wouldn't we have a moral code?
Anyway how do they explain the worth of a moral code based on fear of going to Hell?

I haven't noticed that a

I haven't noticed that a belief in god stopped any religious person from doing wicked things if they were that way inclined.
It might even have made them worse thinking they can square it up with their god later anyway.

Much as I may agree with the

Much as I may agree with the Humanist (philosophy, if you like) that there is no great spirit somewhere that will intercede in the lives of mankind, I'm not sure that it is the sum total of the debate.

It is logical to assume that belief in itself has a power over the events of humanity. Of course there is the negativity of terrorism, but here can also be a positive effect, such as that of person, who is afraid of life, for whatever reason, can have their confidence boosted by thinking that there is some power that will, or might, come to their aid in times of trouble.

And siliboi9 one person's reason can be another person's madness, think about it.

Humanists are definitely

Humanists are definitely materialists, and definitely not hedonists.

I think we should just tell

I think we should just tell them that when they become sufficiently honest to argue their case for God using normal logic and stop making personal attacks on those who don't share their beliefs we'll discuss things with them.

If they haven't enough decency to do that we decline to waste time talking to them.

It is a crude generalisation

It is a crude generalisation to say that religion leads to 'materialism and nihilism', though I don't mind making it.
