Dawkins a Militant Atheist: article in The Australian

Dawkins uses deadpan humour to get his message across, which can rub people up the wrong way. However, the content of his humour can either be a yawn or a laugh.

On Dawkins being a 'militant atheist', I would say that he is, so what? It will be his science which he will be judged on by posterity.

Of course there is no such thing as a militant religionist or militant clergyman.
There are no organizations such as the Australian Christian Lobby and the Right to Life putting pressure on Australian politicians.

No Australian political leader would ever consider making it known that he was a conscientious Christian and took his beliefs into account when making political judgments. NO NEVER. Well hardly ever!

The churches never lobby or use pressure when issues such as homosexuality or family planning or the subject matter of the school science curriculum is under review.

Of course the churches don't dominate the private school system and draw down heavily on the Federal budget for it.

There is no prayer at the commencement of parliamentary sittings and there is no such thing as a Governor's Prayer Breakfast.

You never hear a word from Bishops, Mullahs etc.

No! They all quietly and unobtrusively get on with their acts of worship in a way that no one would ever notice them unless one was a member of the faith.

THEY ARE NEVER IN YOUR FACE.

It is only those militant Atheists who speak out in public.
They should be abused into silence, don't you think?

Good if the atheists would be silent. They are the ones doing the abusing.

If I was a Catholic, Mary, I wouldn't be throwing around the word 'abuse' too freely.

I simply move on if someone proves a moron. Dawkins simply cannot, he has to sit there and argue.

Well at least he does go out and publicly argue the case and does it with great dignity even in the face of some pretty offensive people. What do you do carusmm?

He is doing what we all need to do even if we can't do it in such a big way.
Some religious people are morons and quite a lot of them can be rude but if they are willing to talk in a non violent way I will discuss with them.

What I do, Jenny, is attempt an inner peace. The way that religious people talk about religion, all of them, does violence.

They think it is their God given right to put religion in our faces at all opportunities and we have no right to tell them to get out of the way.
Well lets tell them to 'get out of my face' and refuse to remain silent.
We have our rights too.

As much as we might hate to admit it, religious people are human beings with rights too. If people are weak enough to listen to them, whose fault is that?

No one denies religious people the right to speak.
However when an Atheist speaks why is he branded a "Militant Atheist" or a "Strident Atheist".
Why do they feel free to brand and insult Atheists or Humanists and at the same time expect us to quietly submit to whatever nonsense they are pouring out.
wisernow is right, they are "in your face" in all aspects of life. They are insulting and oppressive.
We need to react to them and not be silenced.

I think we wish that they would shut up, Jenny, at least the most offensive of them. My idea of a good time does not include listening to an idiot and that is about the end of it.

I don't think you're really paying attention. And by the looks of things carusmm is busy enough with his own multiple entries to have time for two alternate personalities.

I think that Jeff's real intention was to make us look programmed but Jeff being a good religious soul couldn't say what he really meant, otherwise the game would have been up. Jeff, like all of the religious nutters that contribute to this website, feels a phoney and wishes for someone to blame; we fit the bill.
